It’s normal to want to make some changes around the home – big or small – and then feel too overwhelmed by the planning and details to do it at all. The problem with that is you know it needs to be done, and time keeps passing with you wishing the changes would be here already. That’s a result of biting off (or dreaming of) more than you can chew. So the intention of this piece is to help you bite off just the right amount in the right places so you feel happy, at peace and get the results you want, without putting it off anymore.
Tasteful and With Purpose
A common mistake can be improving a home too much for the neighborhood, turning the home into an expensive and sometimes odd looking space that stands out in disrespectful way. How much is too much? It honestly depends on the neighborhood you’re in. For example, if you’re in more modest neighborhood, adding a massive wall and iron gate *just* might be pushing it.
Share the upgrade.
It’s totally understandable. You want a whole new upgraded kitchen. But if you go all in on the kitchen and have nothing left to update the bathrooms, floors or fixtures, you’ll actually lower your home’s value. Figure out your biggest priority and then see what you can do with the leftover budget to fit in some other updates to keep your home consistent with the rest of itself. If you only have a minimal budget, then think about doing less, but smarter updates and only where needed.
Smart Floor Planning
People can be careless when they add square footage to their homes. If you add a bedroom that forces you to walk through the laundry room to get there, which is not functional or appealing. Another common ‘functionality fail’ is when people decide to have bathrooms on one side of the house and bedrooms on the opposite. It’s just not thought out properly and will end up costing you far more than you’ll get back in the end.
About Doing It Yourself
We know you want to feel useful and you want to save money too. Those are big reasons why people tackle the big projects around the house. Unfortunately though, if you’re not skilled and experienced, those projects can really end up costing you in the end. Our suggestion is that you DIY on the little things; the things you have done well a dozen times. But if you need to look for a tutorial or feel in any way out of your league, go with a professional.
Color Makes the Difference
Have you ever walked into a home and felt chaotic, at peace, overwhelmed or joyful – just upon entering? Color has a lot to do with that because it affects your mood on a psychological level. So think about how you want to feel and how you want your home to feel in general and then choose colors that support that.
